About Department:

The Department of English of Government Autonomous College, Phulbani was established in the year 1960 to cater to the needs of the students coming from different parts of Kandhamal and nearby districts of Odisha. Since then, the Department has contributed a lot in shaping the great expectations of the students and addressing these in a promising way through rigorous teaching-learning process where creative minds interact with the essence of English language and Literature. The department not only helps in igniting the minds of the learners but also takes charge in their capacity building.

Former Head(s) who have rendered their service to make the Department worth NOW

• Mr Sarat Chandra Sahu(MA) had joined Government College, Phulbani in the year 1998, assumed the charge of Head of the Department in 2000 and continued till his retirement in 2009. During his tenure, the Department saw a healthy academic ambience and a spirit of fraternity.
• Dr Gobinda Chandra Pradhan(MA, PhD) had joined Government College, Phulbani in the year 2003, became Head of the Department in 2009 after the superannuation of Sj Sarat C Sahu. He discharged his duty as the HoD till he assumed the charge of Principal I/C of the college. During his tenure he managed the departmental affairs to the best of his abilities. The Department provided him a launch pad to become the Registrar of Utkal University and Additional Director, Higher Education Department in course of time.
• Dr Suendra Prasad Mahanty(MA, PhD, PGDTE) had joined Government College, Phulbani in 1992, became Head in the year 2010 and continued till his superannuation from Government Service in the year 2014. During his stay in the department, a National Level Seminar on the topic “Cathartic Effects in Literature” was organized to his credit.
